The Faith-Based Coalition for PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) is l a network of advocates to prevent and treat those living with HIV/AIDS in vulnerable communities worldwide.
Our Declaration and Commitment
As American faith leaders, we support saving the lives of millions of people among the world’s most vulnerable communities through prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
In 2003, President George W. Bush launched historic legislation, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), to fight a single virus: HIV/AIDS. At the time, AIDS was hollowing out societies across Sub-Saharan Africa. Leaders from Franklin Graham to Desmond Tutu united in one voice to stop this pandemic, which was killing one out of three people in many nations, such as Uganda. And Irish rock star, Bono, of U2, lit a fire through the heart of America in churches and coffee shops, encouraging pastors, Christian music artists, and congregations to take a stand against the pandemic and advocate to save lives.
Today, because of PEPFAR and thanks to the vision and support of President Bush and administration leaders like Senator-Doctor Bill Frist (Senate Majority Leader), Condoleezza Rice (Secretary of State), Josh Bolton (Chief of Staff), and Michael Gerson (Speechwriter), we can celebrate 26 million lives saved, and 7.8 million babies born HIV-free.
For 22 years, Congress has celebrated this incredible program across the aisle, joining together to support funding that has saved so many lives, stimulated economic growth through job growth and trade, enhanced diplomatic relations, addressed national security issues, and cut deaths caused by HIV/AIDS by more than 75% around the world. With this progress, we predict ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic status by 2030.
That said, in January 2025, the current Administration froze funding for PEPFAR to evaluate the program. The virus is now blooming in bodies across Sub-Saharan Africa, and if we do nothing we will be moving backward with an exponential rise in deaths from HIV/AIDS, namely in children who have the weakest of immune systems.
In support of life and dignity for all around the world, we stand for full funding for PEPFAR and immediate leadership and attention to rectify the PEPFAR program so that we remain on track to end HIV/AIDS by 2030.
